Hi all,
I''ve just started a small (8 foot dia) 2V dome, based on the methods from the "Biodome Revolution" book. Basically, the compound bevels are doable, resulting in pieces such as shown on this site: http://domekits.info/preview_006.htm
Now, this is a test project for an 18 foot greenhouse I am planning, but that will also have larger lumber stock. This first project is done with 2x2 struts, but I''m wondering if it will be prone to splitting when I try to screw it all together? Each 5- or 6-way joint will need a few at least, since any one screw won''t pass through more than 3 boards. Can I just pre-drill and plug away?
Cheers,
Tim

Well... I ended up screwing it all together with 3" deck screws, no pre-drilling required. The screws were ones which were supposed to be less prone to splitting, with occasional notches in the threads, so even with a couple screws near the end of any given 2x2, it all went together fine.
Getting the angles done right was the key to fitting it all, after that assembly was pretty simple.
Cheers,
Tim
