Dear All;
I''m planning to build a 25ft Trapezium panel dome solar greenhouse, I''m thinking of using triple wall instead of glass, insulating the floor and incorporating water drums to store heat, the plan is to be able to extend the growing season over a traditional greenhouse.
I''m considering either using wood or metal, a friend says he could build a jig and turn out perfect welded panels which he thinks that perhaps could have some type of quick fit mechanism.
We are currently at a very early stage and looking for feedback on the practical issues such as what type of metal / metal tubing, quick fit mechanism, how to secure the triple wall, how to waterproof, doors and windows.
We live in Porthcawl South Wales, and would be happy to share best practice with other dome builders and share resources.
Kind Regards
Jon

Hi Jon
welcome to world of dome building that will be a big project. You might want to consider insulating just the perimeter a couple of feet deep instead of the entire floor, you`ll will gain the thermal mass of the enclosed soil volume. As for the practical issues, they are probably the most frustrating part having numerous solutions. You just have to figure out what may work and then decide which is the best method for the task.
I don`t know of anyone who has built a trapezoidal dome so it looks like you`re on a journey of discovery :)
Its probably a good idea to build a small prototype to iron out the issues before embarking on the large scale version. With the best part of 1000 sqft of triple wall polycarbonate it will pay to be 100% sure before committing it to the saw ;)
Looking forward to seeing your project progress.

The keter range of greenhouses use a similar arrangement to the trapezoid except only in one plane but their "6x6" construction manual may give you some ideas for the panels on your dome. Keter greenhouse

Hi I have just built my first model.
Its a 16 segment, but I have inserted a parallel middle section. This will give me 25.6 sq m greenhouse with a unit length of 1 metre.
Next is a model using Screwfix 4x2 glazing acrylic sheet (£70 for 10.) I shall cut them to 1x4 foot sections to keep the same ratios. When I have built that model which will be a third scale I shall do some pix. I used figures and numbers for the dome posted in this site. Idid check them and they seemd to stack up.
I have thought of using glazing bars but am unsure of co-efficients of expansion. I fugured to glue it all together with no structural elements so when it expand it would be as a single unlocked unit.
Screw fix also does glues and both the plumbers solvent weld and the cerosit 7B seem to hold the stuff well. I have also glued glass and conduit. These are on a test piece sitting outside.
I was thinking of using the 10mm twin wall sheets.
