I have seen in a book called ''Bucky Works'' an expandable geodome - quite like the toys that expand from a crystal shape to a sphere when you throw them up but this one expands from 4ft to 18ft I have a couple of questions 1) Has anyone built anything like this? 2) Are there any major disadvantages to such a design? 3) Is there a limit on the size of these designs?

Hi Sounds like a tensegrity. Prospective disadvantages depend mainly on what the end use is, a structure that reconfigures itself under load may be useful in some cases.. it may be difficult to cover though :) The materials used would likely set the size limit.
