What method do the dome builders on this site use for calculating strut lengths for a geodesic dome?
I’ve only used the dome calculator and never actually worked it out from scratch, it would be nice to know if there are any formulas to work it out.

What is the difference between a 2v and 3v dome

A 3v produces a more rounded structure than a 2v and involves more materials and more work :)
2v sphere: 80 panels
3v sphere: 180 panels
4v sphere: 320 panels
6v sphere: 720 panels (ouch!)
The higher the frequency the closer to a perfect curve you get.

Could you please tell me the formula for obtaining the lengths of each side of each panel or struts.
I am wanting to construct a 3meter radius dome using 50mm/75mm panels around the 250mm length per edge. the amount of panels does not bother me. can any one help
Thanks
Laurie

Hi goaussie, Have a look at the dome calculation tools enter the size of dome you want to build and all the struts are worked out for you, including the angles. The only way to make the panels smaller is to increase the frequency and also the complexity. Hope this helps
