Buckminster Fuller my have done a mighty fine job of designing the geodesic dome but it’s not the only way top build a dome.
Below are design drawings for a segmented dome structure, it has all the strength and efficiency of a geodesic dome but can be built using tube from a poly tunnel framework.
Step one:
You first need to decide how many sides you want your dome to have. My design has uses 16 curved tubes to form the dome this would make a large dome using relatively thin tubing. If you wanted to build an octagon dome for example you would need only 8 curved tubes, just increase the tube size to make a bigger dome.
Step two:
You’ll need to have a centre frame fabricated to slot your curved tubes into and a cowl to cover the hole. You don’t have to leave a hole but it comes in pretty handy for ventilation and the cowl finishes off the dome top.
Step tree:
Slot the curved tubes into the centre frame space them evenly then cover with the material of your choice. Fitting a door and brick plinth is very straight forward, you can also buy shrink fit polythene that’s totally clear and wrinkle free when you heat it with a hot air gun.
Below is an illustration showing the segmented dome with short brick riser walls and a solid wood door.
Segmented domes have several advantages over geodesic domes, there’re easier to make water tight, simpler to build and more flexible when it comes to fitting doors and windows. They also don’t look quit as modern and “space age” as geodesic domes, so if you’re looking for a dome with a more traditional look a segmented dome may well suit you.

hi, just wondering wat you think about building a segmented dome for burning man and other camping adventures, I have full use of a muffler shop, hydralic bender, 1' 3/4 tube...was thinking flat steel as a base
thanx

Hi. have you done anything wiht this design? It would be really nice with blown on insulation shell and concrete and windows. Wow is this beautiful. Like the vent at the top.

have you thought about plastic injection molding using recyled plastic for your design? It would allow sectional manufacture, flexible design, strength consideration for recycled materials are overcome by the inhierent design, solar ability is 360 deg, many adavantages over geodesic

I love the look of this dome. I wonder if you have more detailed plans for one? I am also interested in the shrink poly material you mentioned. Wrinkle free makes for a more finished look. Nice job on your site. Its very useful,

Loving this site and all the help given, remarkable!
I saw a tv program about 'The New York Dome House' it was very similar to this type of dome, but on a much LARGER scale (54' I think)
